TOPIC:  No Guarantees – A Summer on the Kazan River, Nunavut
Presented by:   Katherine Suboch

A Canadian heritage river since 1988, the Kazan River had been on Katherine Suboch’s bucket list for years.   The lure of a treeless landscape, the possibility of wildlife encounters, a rich cultural history wrapped with exciting river travel in remote wilderness, ticked all the boxes.   In 2016, she joined five strangers to partake in an epic 850km paddle.   As per many long canoe trips, it developed into a murky brew of social navigation, physical challenges, punctuated by emotional highs and lows.   Join Katherine Suboch to re-live five weeks of ‘Baker Lake or bust’ via slide show and video clips.”

Bio: Katherine was born in the city but early circumstances instilled wanderlust during the formative years. Smitten by the wilds of Canada, first by canoe then ski and backpack, she has poked her nose into hidden corners from coast (Labrador) to coast (Ellesmere Island) to coast (Haida Gwaii). Self-guided trips with friends (and husband Ron) are especially cherished and have occasionally led to places where she had no business being. Now retired, this passionate camper relishes the prospect of more provoking adventures ahead.

TOPIC:Revisiting “Paddling as a Place”
Presented by:Erica Bailey

Erika Bailey works an international transition advisor at the University of Toronto. In her spare time, she is a writer, dancer, bicyclist, and – of course – paddler. Her masters thesis, Paddling as Place: Experiential Learning of Place and Ecological Identity (2013) is an arts-based narrative inquiry into experiential learning on canoe trips. Erika has canoed all her life, a gift taught to her immigrant parents by her Poppa – Omond Solandt.

Five years after completing her thesis, Erika re-explores how canoe tripping experiences impact our sense of place on how we make decisions based on our evolving ecological identities. Based on her book, Padding as Place, Experiential Learning of Place and Ecological Identity (2013) she will discuss how artifacts embody stories, how stories shape our lives and choices, and how those choices express our cultures of environmentalism. Applying a lens of how culture develops, together, we will inquire into ways paddlers can intentionally effect change in smaller and larger communities.

TOPIC:Adventures West of the Spanish River Area”
Presented by:Brad & Wayne Jennings

Don’t miss this evening of fun with Brad & Wayne Jennings. They will have some shorts to view from the area west of Spanish River as well of some of their other great adventures. Here is a brief Bio on this great team.
“The father-son team created ‘Explore the Backcountry’ in 2008 as part of a television pilot. Eager to inspire individuals to explore the backcountry, they’ve since expanded with a website, countless videos and an ongoing book project. Their films have been featured at numerous paddling festivals including both the Reel Paddling and Waterwalker film festivals. Their video documentation of canoe trips can be traced back to a 15 year old Wayne, who in 1973, set off on his first solo canoe trip down the Moon River with an Argus Super 8 movie camera and half a dozen rolls of Super 8 film. Wayne turned his passion for film into a lifelong career as an ENG cameraman for a major Canadian TV Network. Wayne’s son, Brad, has been paddling since the age of 3. An avid paddler and adventure racer, he has translated his passion for the outdoors into the pursuit of studying his masters in environmental science and biogeochemistry at Trent University. ”
